It’s a norm in Malaysia for schooling kids to live off of their parent’s money until they’re old enough to leave the nest, though we do once in a while see cases where kids either help out with their parent’s businesses or get part time jobs outside of school.

One netizen, Ariffazharb (@ariffazharb) took to his Twitter profile to showcase a 16-year-old school boy who he had caught on camera having his meal in the back alleyways of a shop. It turns out that the boy was a food delivery rider.

Ariffazharb wrote, “This kid is in Form 4 and has a licence, so on Saturday and Sundays he works as a food delivery rider. Still schooling, he takes accounts and additional mathematics. All the best, buddy!”

The boy, Muhd Irwan Shah Sabarudin, told MyMetro that he was not forced to work but it was his choice to spend his spare time learning independence.

“For now, my parents are providing me with all that I need but I chose to pursue a part-time job as a food delivery rider because I’d like to be independent and gain experience,” he said.

Irwan (right) also chose to work so that he wouldn’t have to depend on his family when it comes to leisurely expenditure.

“Moreover, my exams are over and I have a motorcycle, so I’d prefer to spend my time benefiting through working instead of just sitting around playing on my phone. At least, I earn money through working so that I can buy whatever I want without having to depend on my family,” he added.

Ariffazharb’s posting has since garnered over 28,100 retweets.

School kids should truly look up to Irwan as an example of how to carry one’s self.
