Cash is no longer king! After decades of being the backbone of local businesses, physical cash is slowly being replaced by digital transactions as we stride towards a cashless future.

The convenience of cashless payments is NOT the only factor that drives the trend—some Malaysians have decided to go cashless for some rather unexpected (and funny) reasons! Keep on reading to find out more!

1. Long queues at ATMs

“The queues at ATMs are exceptionally long during payday. After being in a long queue once, I’ve decided to go cashless and this saves me a lot of time.” — Nuqman, 31

Payday is arguably the most-anticipated day of every month until we start queueing to withdraw cash. With the time spent in the queue, we could’ve gone home earlier and spent more time with our loved ones!

2. Running short of small change

“Splitting the bill with my friends is a hassle. We often don’t have enough small change to pay for our parts and have to owe each other money. Sometimes they forget to pay me back too! Ugh!” — Anthony, 28

While splitting the bill, it is wise to opt for online transfer, which allows you to instantly pay the exact price of your meal. This way, you and your friends can truly enjoy all catch-up sessions without worrying about small changes and debt!

3. Receipts that clutter the pockets

“My jeans pockets and bags were always filled with receipts. Before I could record my expenses, I either lost some of them or accidentally laundered them in the washing machine!” — Jessica, 25

Cashless payments are automatically recorded in our bank account’s transaction history. By logging into our account, we can track our expenses without paper receipts (#SaveMotherEarth)!

4. Losing a wallet containing cash

“Last month, I lost a wallet containing a few hundred Ringgit in cash. While I could still freeze my bank cards to prevent them from being used, I could never get my cash back.” — Chan, 36

If your wallet is stolen (touch wood!), your cash is gone and irretrievable. On the other hand, credit cards allow you to cancel unauthorised transactions in cases of fraud or theft, which helps protect your savings!

5. Doing the math in your head

“I’m very bad at math, and calculating change at the cashier counter really stresses me out. There was once I confronted the cashier for shortchanging me, only to realise that my calculation was wrong!” — Julia, 34

Not everyone is a human calculator, and that’s okay! Thankfully, with e-wallets or bank cards, we can pay the exact amounts without expecting any change, saving us the hassle of doing the math in our heads!

6. Holding up the line at the cashier counter

“I was fumbling through my wallet and pockets to look for the right coins. The queueing customers behind called me out for taking too long, it was so embarrassing!” — Kylie, 23

Now that we can simply tap our bank cards or scan QR codes, making payments have been made so much quicker. We’ll no longer hold up the line and waste others’ precious time!

Other than avoiding the annoying money moments above, going cashless also comes with many other benefits, especially when you use debit or credit cards! Such advantages include:

  • Enjoy rewards like discounts, cashback, and free gifts
  • Build credit score while using credit cards
  • Make secure payments in-store and online
  • Cancel unauthorised transactions in cases of fraud

Among all the benefits, bank cards are best known for making quick and convenient payments—just “Tap, Check and Go”!

While e-payment terminals like QR pay and e-wallets can also be convenient, tech-illiterate users can have a hard time navigating through these online platforms.

With debit and credit cards, users can just tap their cards on the card reader, check the bill for unauthorised surcharges, and go about their day worry-free!

Did we also mention that opting for card payments is also beneficial for business merchants?! Here are some of those benefits:

  • Don’t have to worry about fake notes or torn cheques
  • Encourage customers to make more frequent and larger purchases
  • Speed up checkout processes and reduce wait times
  • Eliminate the need to keep excess cash or prepare small change
  • Enable foreigners to make payments easily
