An online dessert seller, Auntie Jaa, who runs Suka Dessert, broke the silence regarding the halal status of her business, following the circulation of the lack of JAKIM’s Halal certificate for her company despite being in business for approximately 6 years.
Auntie Jaa admitted that while she carries no Halal certificate from JAKIM, all the ingredients sourced are certified Halal.
The matter initially went viral after a Malaysian content creator, Amin Sukor, who also previously shared about Lavender Bakery’s lack of JAKIM’s Halal certificate, spoke about Suka Dessert. Despite being Muslim-owned, Amin wondered why Auntie Jaa did not invest in a Halal certificate.
In her TikTok post, Auntie Jaa explained and apologised to Malaysians for not having a Halal certificate, saying that over the years, she invested in other matters, including new machines, renovations, and training for employees.
“I know this is a mistake on my part, and I will apply for a Halal certificate from JAKIM soon.”
Auntie Jaa also recently started to sell New York croissants, which she sourced from another Muslim-owned pastry business that also did not have a halal certificate from JAKIM. According to her, the business is currently applying for the certificate, and she assured Malaysians that the ingredients used by the pastry business are also Halal certified.
However, to preserve the image of the pastry business, Auntie Jaa has temporarily stopped ordering supplies from them.
As for the 5,580 pieces of croissants that were recently received, Suka Desserts will be giving away ALL the pastries to those convinced of the halal-certified ingredients.
“Darlings, forgive Auntie Jaa for my insensitivity in this matter. We’ll do better and we appreciate the constructive criticisms.”
Auntie Jaa is expected to announce more about the croissants giveaway soon.
