The Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) revealed that it has seized a Mercedes-Benz sedan during a special operation targetting overloaded heavy vehicles in the state on Thursday (13 March) between 12am and 9am in Melaka.

While the operation mainly targeted overloaded heavy vehicles, action was taken against the luxury vehicle after JPJ Melaka enforcement officers found that it had no valid road tax or insurance.

In a statement, JPJ Melaka asserted that the Mercedes-Benz sedan violated Sections 23(1) and 90(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for having an expired road tax and no insurance coverage, respectively.

Hence, the luxury car was seized by JPJ Melaka under Section 64(1) of the same Act. The department also found that the owner had failed to renew the car’s road tax and insurance since 6 September 2023.

According to local media reports, the owner of the seized Mercedes-Benz sedan is a 40-year-old man and the luxury car was seized during an inspection at one of the roadblocks.

174 vehicles were inspected and 128 notices were issued

Overall, JPJ Melaka inspected 174 vehicles during the special operation, with 128 notices issued for various offences.

These include ordering 39 vehicles to undergo weighing under Section 63(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 82(2) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.

Out of the 39 vehicles, 38 were found to be overloaded, with the other vehicle failing to appear for weighing, resulting in a notice being issued under Section 63(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
