Recently, the authorities from the Perak branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) revealed that petrol stations can shortchange us!

Taking to their TikTok page, a Perak KPDN enforcement officer shared how petrol station pumps can be adjusted to give customers less petrol than what they paid for.

They wrote, “Do we truly get the same value as what we paid for when filling up petrol?”

Check the verification sticker

In the video, the enforcement officer explained that, with the help of their equipment, KPDN can verify the accuracy of petrol pumps by checking how much petrol is dispensed and whether it corresponds with the amount paid.

Should the equipment show that the amount of petrol is less than what the customer should be getting, the petrol station may have adjusted their pumps to increase their profits by scamming the customer.

The officer urged customers to check the verification sticker that can be found above each petrol pump, which shows that the pump has been inspected annually to ensure that no adjustments have been made.

He also encouraged people to make a report to KPDN should they find that they are getting less than what they paid for.

A petrol station had adjusted its pumps for profit

In a second video, the KPDN officers confronted staff members of the petrol station that was discovered to be conducting this pump adjustment scam, after a complaint was made by the public.

“Also, for everyone’s information, we have found a petrol station that has adjusted their pumps so that they profit more,” he added.

They then conducted checks on the station’s petrol pumps using special equipment and found that the pumps were indeed adjusted to provide less petrol to customers.

The officer proceeded to inform the petrol station staff that KPDN will take appropriate action against the petrol station in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act 1972.
