The Malaysian Immigration Department has confirmed that one of its officers is being investigated following the discovery of 12 international passports hidden on his person while he was working at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA2) last month.

According to a report by Berita Harian, the Malaysian Immigration Director-General, Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, shared that an integrity investigation paper has been opened while the officer in question has been transferred to the KLIA Detention Depot but he has not yet reported himself for duty there.

“The integrity investigation process is still being carried out internally by the KLIA Immigration Integrity Division,” he said.

A police report in regards to this was made on January 7, and the case was classified as ‘departmental action’.

Zakaria further explained that his department will not compromise or protect any officer who commits integrity violations that can tarnish the department’s reputation.

“Action and punishment will be taken based on legal provisions, including dismissal if the officer involved is proven guilty,”

“We welcome the public to report integrity misconduct by immigration officers via phone call at 03-8801246, or email to [email protected],” he added.

Where it all started

Prior to this, it was reported that an immigration officer was accused of keeping 12 foreign passports in the waistband of his trousers. This led to the suspicion of corruption.

The passports were discovered while the officer was sleeping at the Terminal 2 Operations Office Meeting Room, while he was supposed to be on duty.
