Sexy outfits are allowed at concerts in Sarawak as long as they’re not “too excessive.”

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah recently highlighted the concert guidelines in the state, saying that “there’s nothing wrong with being sexy out there.”

Abdul Karim said that while Sarawak has its guidelines for attire regulations, the rules are not as strict as the ones set in Peninsular Malaysia.

In response to reporters’ inquiries about whether Sarawak enforces specific dress code regulations for concerts, Abdul stated that guidelines for shows exist everywhere in the world, including in the United States of America.

“In America, I believe that if a performer were to go on stage naked, it wouldn’t be allowed either.”

“In Sarawak, we have our own guidelines – as long as the sexy outfits are not overly revealing to the point of enabling criticism. We’re not as strict as Peninsular Malaysia,” Abdul explained.

Abdul was addressing concerns over concert dress codes during a press conference for the upcoming “Nidji: Pelangi di Kuching 2025” concert at Plaza Merdeka that’s scheduled for 26 April 2025.

The Minister also highlighted another music event in Sarawak last year – Borneo Sonic – where he said several people were dressed sexily, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Abdul Karim also highlighted Sarawak’s commitment to hosting major entertainment events, including the Rainforest World Music Festival, Borneo Jazz, and Kuching Jazz Festival.

What do you think of Abdul’s take on this? Do you think we should see some leniency in terms of concert outfits?
