The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and their subsidiary, SEDC Permata, have postponed their plans to segregate a popular food court in Kuching, Sarawak, based on the sale of alcohol in a zoning initiative.

This move apparently comes after the public shared their belief that the segregation would cause a rift in the Sarawak people’s harmonious state.

The postponement

SEDC Permata took to its Facebook page to explain how the zoning initiative came to be and to announce its postponement.

They wrote, “In November 2024, SEDC received a proposal from Jabatan Agama Islam Sarawak (JAIS) recommending separate alcohol and non-alcohol dining zones in the establishment. Following further discussions with our tenants, an agreement was reached and finalised in December 2024.”

This initiative forms part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the dining experience for all patrons by ensuring the space accommodates diverse preferences. As a result, Topspot Foodcourt Management introduced a zoning arrangement that divides the foodcourt into 2 distinct areas namely, an Alcohol-Free Zone and a General Dining Zone.”

Any updates will be communicated transparently

However, after having heard the public’s opinion, they have opted to press pause on the initiative.

“However, we acknowledge the concerns raised by members of the public regarding this implementation. Considering these discussions, the management has decided to put the notice on hold,”

“We will retract the notice and conduct further engagements with the relevant parties to ensure that any final decision takes into account the best interests of everyone. Any updates on this matter will be communicated transparently to the public,” they added.
