A tenant of a house in Miri, Sarawak was caught stealing electricity to mine bitcoin in his bedroom.

In a viral TikTok post by Dylan, a property agent in Miri, he shared a series of pictures showing a bedroom full of the electrical devices used by the tenant for bitcoin mining, which Dylan dubbed “looking like a Korean BBQ shop.”

Dylan and his team helped the landlord clean the bedroom and clear off all items, including boxes of wires, extension plugs, and other electrical devices left by the tenant, who has now gone missing.

At the time of writing (October 4), Dylan said the landlord of the house is assisting in the investigation, which involves PDRM in Lutong and Sarawak Energy, the state electric utility company who also requested the photos of the electric meter reading from the landlord.

“Sarawak Energy has asked us to contact the tenant, but he has not been picking up the calls,” Dylan remarked.

In a brief conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, Dylan said he passed by the house and noticed the cars that were parked outside, including a vehicle from Sarawak Energy.

“We then informed the landlord about the matter.”

When asked about the tenant, Dylan told WORLD OF BUZZ that the missing tenant did not stay in the house that long.

“The tenant moved in around July this year.”

In case you are not aware, Sarawak Energy revealed on its website that electricity theft involving cryptocurrency mining is not a new phenomenon in Sarawak, particularly in Miri.

In April alone, 3 illegal cryptocurrency mining cases were reported in joint operations by PDRM and Sarawak Energy. The illegal cases brought monthly losses of about RM30,000 for the utility company.

The cases are being investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. Those found guilty face a maximum fine of RM200,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 5 years upon conviction.

To our readers in Sarawak, have you heard of bitcoin mining involving electricity theft in your area?
