For most Malaysians, especially city folks, it’s pretty hard, if not darn near impossible to get anything under RM1. That’s why it makes it all the more surprising, when we hear about Malaysian food being sold for just that – less than RM1!

In Seremban (KL-ites, if you’re reading this, it’s only an hour away!), a man running a mamak stall has gone viral for selling his nasi lemak at just RM0.70! Located along Jalan Lobak, Kedai Makanan dan Minuman Ikhbal is attracting customers from near and far, thanks to his insanely affordable prices.

According to Sin Chew, RM0.70 isn’t even the cheapest price the nasi lemak has been sold at, as it used to be RM0.50 back in 2005. However, due to rising costs, Ikhbal, the owner of the mamak stall, was forced to revise the price. Still very reasonable! Naturally, Malaysians love themselves a good deal, which is why Ikhbal sells 1,200 packets a day from Monday to Friday, and as many as 1,600 packets a day on Saturdays and Sundays!

When we added up the numbers, that came up to RM840 of earnings daily, and that’s just during the weekdays! Additionally, Ikhbal offers mee, bihun, eggs, kuih and drinks as well, and they’re just as easy on the wallet. For starters, one kuih (e.g. curry puff) goes for RM0.40, mee and bihun also fall within the RM0.70 category, while teh tarik and kopi c are sold at RM1.20. If a customer wishes to bungkus, the surcharge is just RM0.30!

In his interview, Ikhbal told the daily that he chose nasi lemak as his star product, as it’s a staple breakfast among Malaysians, and well beloved regardless of status and ethnicity. While he admits that the portion isn’t the biggest – not that we’re complaining at that price – Ikhbal says the variety of toppings makes up for it, as there’s anchovies, eggs, petai and more. On average, his adult customers will opt for two packets or more to have a fulfilling breakfast, while kids will only need one.

If you’d like to pay Ikhbal’s stall a visit, it’s open every day from 5am to 11am. Getting to enjoy a tasty, economical menu while surrounded by people from diverse walks of life – that’s about as Malaysian of an experience as you can get!
