Previously, a video of a standard three student breaking down in tears went viral after she was seen being scolded by a group of teachers who were pressuring her to confess something.
The student’s mother has since demanded an explanation for how her daughter was treated, but says she has yet to receive any response from the teacher she confronted.
“Public servants need to act with integrity”
According to BERNAMA, the video has since gotten the attention of Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who shared her thoughts and issued a reminder in response to the incident.
She said the ministry is already looking into what happened and stressed that it’s their job to keep reminding teachers about integrity and proper conduct.
Fadhlina pointed out that teachers are expected to stick to the Malaysian Teacher Standard (SGM) 2.0 when carrying out their duties.
“We’ve reminded them many times, and there are even guidelines in place. As public servants, they need to follow the rules and act with integrity. That’s why we keep stressing this from time to time,” she said.
“The matter could’ve been handled better”
Fadhlina also pointed out that no matter what the issue was, there are better, safer spaces to talk things through, places that offer more privacy so the matter can be handled properly.
She has also asked Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan to look into the incident and remind teachers to always uphold integrity and ethics, whether it’s in the classroom, outside of it, or even on social media.
She also said she regretted what happened, especially since the video going viral had such a big impact.
